The Church of Sainte Thérèse

The Church of Saint Thérèse, formerly the Carmes Convent, is in the same district as the big market at the Place Marcadieu, and has a rich and eventful history…

During the Revolution, the ancient Carmes Convent was used by the military for various administrative services, and lastly as a fodder shop.

There were plans to create a new entrance in the wall on the north side to make it easier for carts to access the building. However, this caused the entire north wall and the whole roof to collapse. The Church of Sainte-Thérèse almost disappeared for good in 1838…

It was rebuilt in 1839, placed under the patronage of Sainte Thérèse d’Avila in 1941 and then officially reopened in 1945. The renovation work on this church that was practically in ruins was partly carried out by artist Nelli, who was also the sculptor for the nearby Montaut Fountain.

Its current appearance resembles the Gothic style of Languedoc and the only remaining 12th-century feature is the spire from the convent’s former abbatial church.
